EC Eyes Introducing Road Toll As Of June ’08
Barrot said the toll would be set depending on the pollution level of cars and the frequency with which highways and national roads are used.
The commissioner told a news conference in Bucharest that the legislative frame that will allow countries to apply a coherent taxation system for highway and national roads usage will be finalized in June at the level of the European Union.
The official said that funds collected from the road toll would be used to develop and improve the roads and the railroad transportation system.
Barrot said that each state will apply the stipulations in the road toll as it considers fit.
