According to the new car tax formula, car owners will pay a higher tax for new cars, which are seen to be used for a longer period of time than an older car.

“The European Commission responded favorably regarding the first registration tax for cars and we are currently making the last adjustments with respect to the percentages to be applied to the tax,” the sources said.

The level of CO2 emissions will be taken in consideration for Euro 3 cars that have this indicator included in the car’s manual. Owners of Euro3 cars for which the CO2 emission level is not included in the manual may chose to assess the carbon dioxide emission level at the Romanian Automotive Register or to accept the taxes imposed for the other types of pollutant emissions, such as nitrogen oxide.

The new car tax formula will be presented most probably in the next week government meeting that is to take place on Monday, said on Thursday finance minister Varujan Vosganian.

Mid March, Vosganian confirmed the country’s car tax regime would consider the level of carbon dioxide emissions for Euro 3 cars as well, in addition to Euro 4 cars. He said the tax will vary according to the car’s age, lowering by 5% for each year of usage.

The government introduced the car tax early last year, when the elimination of excises for imported vehicles thinned the state budget. The tax was immediately frowned upon by the EU, which considered it discriminating against used EU imported cars. The first registration tax, as it was called, was calculated depending on engine capacity, car age and level of emissions.
