Initially, the executive had decided that the CO2 emission calculation system be applied only for Euro4 cars.
Three weeks ago, the government sent a new letter to the European Commission presenting a new tax calculation method of the car tax that takes into account the CO2 emission levels.
The government proposed computing the car tax by considering CO2 emissions for Euro4 cars, while the current formula, considering pollution norms, emissions and engine capacity, would be applied to all other vehicles, with the sums increasing significantly from the proposal undergoing debate.
Government and the European Commission’s representatives debated over the last two weeks on the car tax formula, and European experts asked that the tax be computed according to CO2 emission levels for Euro3 cars as well.
On Tuesday, president Traian Basescu sent a letter to prime minister Calin Tariceanu, asking him to cancel by an emergency ordinance the country's tax on car registration, accusing Tariceanu that, through such measures, he is belittling Romanians.
However, the prime minister said the president is trying to win cheap votes without fully understanding the importance of the car tax.
He added that Basescu’s attitude sheds light into his agenda that aims winning as many votes as possible in the detriment of Romanian citizens.
