EC Sees Romania’s Jobless Rate At 8% In '09

“Following the decline in the economic activity, unemployment is expected to rise from a record low of 5% in 2008 to about 8% in both 2009 and 2010,” the Commission said monday in its economic spring forecast.

EC had estimated in January a jobless rate of 7% in 2009 and of 6.9% in 2010.

Romanian labor minister Marian Sarbu said on March 23 that the number of jobless people by the end of the year will be higher by 200,000 - 300,000 than the initial estimate of 525,000 people.

The National Prognosis Commission CNP estimated a 6.8% unemployment rate by yearend, up by over two percentage points compared with 4.4% a year earlier.

According to the International Labor Organization, the number of unemployed people will reach 795,000 this year, from 575,000 in 2008, while in 2010, the number of jobless people will slightly fall to 770,000.

The National Employment Agency ANOFM stated that Romania’s unemployment rate was at 5.6% in March, up 0.3 percentage points compared with the previous month. Thus, the total number of jobless people was of 513,621 in March, 35,761 more than in February.

Between 1992 and 2004, the average unemployment rate was at 6.5%, rising to 7.3% by 2006. Then, it gradually fell to 6.4% in 2007 and 5.8% in 2008.
