Romanian Magistrates With Bucharest Court Of Appeals To Continue Protests

Romanian magistrates with the Bucharest Court of Appeals voted Friday to continue protests until a pact for justice is signed, despite the High Council of Magistrates’ call for a halt in protests, people close to the matter told MEDIAFAX Friday.

The sources also said the same solution might apply in the case of Bucharest’s other courts.

The president of the High Council of Magistrates (CSM), Virgil Andreies, announced Thursday the CSM calls on magistrates to consider suspending protests until their claims are met.

At the same time, Andreies said the CSM demands immediate dialogue with the Parliament and the Government on the statute of magistrates.

The CSM stance was voted with nine pros and five cons.

„The plenary meeting of the CSM has taken into consideration the open letter issued by president Traian Basescu. Regarding the protest in Justice, the CSM reiterates its stance on the magistrates’ claims. To the same extent, we request dialogue with the other powers on the statute of magistrates,” Andreies said.

Thus, given the interest of the citizens, the CSM recommend that the general assemblies of magistrates consider the option to suspend protests until a solution of the claims put forth by judges and prosecutors.

Romanian magistrates are displeased with the salary grid, the under-financing of the legal system and demand that the justice sector receive 1% of the GDP.
