Romanian democrat liberal Prime Minister Emil Boc said he sent the President the proposition to dismiss social democrat Interior Minister Dan Nica and to have democrat liberal Development Minister Vasile Blaga serve as interim because social democrats refused to nominate anyone.

The position of deputy prime minister and that of interior minister should be filled by social democrats under the governing coalition’s agreement, but social democrats have refused to nominate an interim or a new minister and threatened to leave the government if Nica is dismissed.

Boc fired Nica Monday citing poor management and his recent statements alleging plans to rig presidential elections due on November 22. Boc gave social democrats 24 hours to nominate a replacement, but they decided to reaffirm their support for Nica and refused to nominate a replacement, threatening to leave the government.

Social democrat leader Mircea Geoana on Tuesday wrote to Basescu and urged him to intervene and prevent a major political crisis that would be triggered with the sacking of Nica.
