Romania deals with a high-probability rate of social unrest in response to the economic crisis, British thinktank Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) warned in a report Friday.
EIU Sees Romania Prone To Social Unrest
According to EIU, Romania may be a “flashpoint for political destabilization” over the next few years.
“The deteriorating economic situation and rising unemployment raise the specter of social unrest in Romania,” the report noted.
EIU placed Romania 66th out of 165 states based on the risk of facing social unrest.
“Romania, whose break with communism was the most violent in eastern Europe with the exception of the former Yugoslav republics, experienced episodes of violent political upheaval in the 1990s, with outbreaks of inter-ethnic conflict, violent demonstrations in the capital and trade union protests including forceful blockades of roads and railways. Public unrest was most notable during periods of declining economic output in 1990-92 and 1996-99,” the report said.
Among states that joined the European Union in 2004 and 2007, only Estonia and Latvia presented a higher risk of social unrest than Romania.
