„I would like to make the Defense Ministry aware of the high importance of negotiations with the U.S. regarding the location of missile batteries. It’s not a secret. Romania will have three batteries of eight missiles each. The system is defensive and cannot be turned into an offensive one,” Basescu said at the Defense Ministry’s activity report meeting.

The head of state also said that, by hosting missile interceptors, Romania ensures its protection from any missile attack.

Basescu said early february Romania has agreed to host missile interceptors, as part of the revamped U.S. anti-missile plan. He said interceptors will be operational in the country as of 2015.
