“Corruption is the antithesis of democracy and rule of law. Corruption unpunished corrodes belief and credibility in a democracy and stifles economic growth and investment,” Taubman said, adding only an independent, non-politicized judiciary in a rule of law society can break the back of corruption.
“The only solution is equal and swift justice for all under the law,” the outgoing U.S. ambassador said, adding “Make no mistake, the fight against corruption was not the personal crusade of Nick Taubman, it’s the priority of my President and of the United States Government as well, and of the European Union and the United Nations, through the UN Convention Against Corruption.”
The U.S. official also said he is “in good company” when he speaks out against corruption and the need to assert the rule of law, adding he has learnt from discussions with ordinary Romanians that fighting corruption is a priority for them as well.
