Romania’s Econ Min Vosganian Says Gas Prices Up On Jan 1st, Power Prices Not

Economy and Finance Minister Varujan Vosganian said on Thursday that gas prices may be hiked as of January 1, but says power prices will be maintained at the same level, following the connection to the national grid of the second nuclear reactor at Cernavoda power station.

He did not say how much gas prices may rise at the beginning of next year.

But Vosganian said gas and power prices will not be hiked by more than the central bank’s inflation target of 2.8% – 4.8% in 2008.

Romania’s energy watchdog deputy president Nicolae Opris said that the institution will announce the new tariffs by December 15.

"For now, we cannot make any prognosis regarding the gas tariffs. The least I can say is that we do expect an increase. Also, this increase will not affect electricity prices due to the higher amount of energy produced at Cernavoda,” Opris said.

Romania committed in 2004 to align gas prices from local production with the prices from imported gas by January 1, 2007, but the authorities have requested another deadline which expires at the end of 2008.

Vosganian said earlier this year that the country may request the European Union to stretch the deadline by 2010.
