In a common press conference with Macedonia’s deputy European affairs minister, Bujar Osmani, Ciamba stated his country’s support for the EU accession of the former Yugoslav territory.
“Romania is determined to support enlargement (of the European Union, ed.) during its EU Council presidency (…) It will be important for us that the beginning of Northern Macedonia’s accession negotiations to happen during our EU Council presidency.
Osmani also reiterated his country's commitment towards an Euro-Atlantic future, deeming the following six months “critical for defining the future” of both Europe and his country.
Macedonia will change its official name to the Republic of Northern Macedonia, after the Greek Parliament agreed to ratify the naming agreement last week, thus ending a 27-year dispute between the two states over the country’s name. The dispute was the one of the biggest obstacles in Macedonia’s accession to the EU and NATO.
