According to a press release of the Federation of Romanian Transport Operators, the memo was sent Thursday to Prime Minster Calin Tariceanu, the ministers of transport, interior and finance, President Traian Basescu, the standing office in Brussels of the Romanian transport employers and to the European Commissioner for Transport Jacques Barrot.
Transporters remind in their memo that they have made known their problems in October 2007 and were promised that some of their proposals would be applied, while other were to be discussed in further meetings.
Transporters say none of the promises they were made in October was kept. Moreover, they say, their situation has worsened and several organizations throughout the country have agreed to go on general strike.
Transporters demand clear and consistent policies regarding traffic restrictions on public roads, considering the country’s poor infrastructure, and ask the reintroduction of road tolls valid for three and six months and the elimination of value added tax from the toll.
Transporters warned that during the general strike no commercial vehicle will be allowed to provide transport services on Romanian territory.
