The Senate legal committee approved the draft law approving Government Ordinance no. 5/2008 amending Law no. 349/2002 on the prevention and fight against the consumption of tobacco products.

However, the committee brought a series of amendments to the normative act, one of them eliminating the provision according to which cigarettes cannot be sold in stores found less than 50 meters from schools or hospitals.

The mentioned article states that "it is forbidden to sell tobacco products in economic units found within, or at most 50 meters from any point of access in, hospitals and school units, except higher education units." "The distance will be measured in the length of the public road," the article reads.

The legal committee amended the article, and the new text reads " it is forbidden to sell tobacco products in economic units found within hospitals and school units, except higher education units."
