„The investment projects will increase the price for coal, but we cannot cut loose this segment, even if it is pollutant. The sector needs to be restructured in terms of plant efficiency and staff numbers,” Serban told the MEDIAFAX Talks about Energy conference.
Furthermore, Romania needs to develop the nuclear production in tight connection with the fossil-based energy output, according to Serban.
„Uranium needs to be developed, we need to use the last resources we have, and then develop relations, such as those with Kazakhstan. (…) In 2-3 years we will correlate our strategy with the European one,” Serban said.
Romania’s sole nuclear power plant runs on two reactors with powers of some 700 MW each, which provide some 18% of national consumption. Another two reactors, with similar output, will be built by 2015- 2016, following an investment estimated at EUR4 billion.
The authorities plan to build another nuclear plant until 2030.
