Romanian Car Market Sees Third Largest Decline In EU In 1H, Of 41.5%

Romania’s car market registered the third biggest decline in the European Union in the first half of the year, of 41.5%, while bigger declines were registered only in neighboring Bulgaria and Hungary and the EU car market increased 0.2%.

In the first six months of the year, 36,636 cars were registered in Romania compared to 62,657 cars in the same interval last year, according to data provided by the Association of European Carmakers (ACEA). In Bulgaria and Hungary, the new car market declined 43.2%, to 7,299 cars, and 43.8%, to 22,355 cars, respectively.

The biggest growth, of 57.7%, was registered in Portugal, where 115,258 new cars were registered in January-June.

A total 7,285,487 cars were registered in the first half of the year in the European Union and the market declined in ten countries and registered growth in the rest. ACEA was not provided with data on Malta and Cyprus.

In June, the Romanian car market saw 10,285 new car registrations, down

6.5% compared to June 2009, a decline is similar to that of the overall EU car market, which dropped 6.9% in June, to a total 1,341,092 million cars.

The biggest growth in June was registered by Ireland (75.8%, to 8,452 cars) and the biggest drop was registered in Slovakia (minus 40.6%, to 6,154 cars).
