Lawmakers also approved with 323 to 24 votes and three abstention the report on the law recalculating pensions, after the Constitutional Court said the provisions referring to the recalculation of magistrates’ pensions were unconstitutional.
The joint committee for legal matters in Romania’s Parliament unanimously adopted Monday evening favorable reports on the austerity law package, eliminating the articles slashing or recalculating public pensions.
The committee’s members eliminated the provisions reducing pensions and remuneration for caretakers of disabled pensioners by 15%, and setting the pension point at 622.9 lei (EUR1=RON4.3257), deemed unconstitutional, from article 9 of the Law concerning measures to re-establish budgetary balance.
The joint committee also eliminated the provisions of article 1 letter „c” of the Law concerning certain measures in the field of pensions, which involved the recalculation of magistrates’ pensions. The committee also amended related articles which made reference to the unconstitutional provisions.
Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled last Friday that some of the austerity measures for which the Government received a confidence vote in Parliament are unconstitutional, namely those referring to pension reductions.
