Romanian Transp Min Shuts Down Unprofitable Rail Route

Romania’s Transport Ministry will end the service on the rail route connecting Bucharest northern train station to Otopeni Airport due to losses, minister Radu Berceanu said Tuesday.

“The train generates losses and, like any thing that triggers losses, will be shut down. Ridership is too low,” Berceanu said.

He did not forward a date on the service’s termination.

The Bucharest-Otopeni rail route was launched in February.

The train travels on the route Gara de Nord – Triaj – Chitila – Mogosoaia – Balotesti, from where passengers have to continue their journey by bus until they reach Otopeni Airport.

The price per ticket, including the bus fare, is of six lei (EUR1=RON4.1529).
