Romania Cuts Almost 3,000 Jobs This Week

Romania will scrap over 24,125 jobs between April and October, almost 3,000 more than last week, the National Employment Agency ANOFM stated Wednesday.

The bulk of layoffs will be operated in Bucharest (3,334), and in the counties of Prahova (1,599), Timiş (1,468), Argeş (1,399), Braşov (1,106), Cluj (1,070), Alba (999), Dâmboviţa (986), Bacău (983) and Arad (901).

Of the 294 companies which announced layoffs, most are from Bucharest (22),Timiş (17), Cluj (16), Arad and Argeş (14 each).

Most jobs will be cut in the clothing sector (1,998), chemical products (1,776), oil and natural gas extraction (1,498), metal production industry (1,352), machines and tools production (1,194), leatherworking (1,132), road transport vehicle construction (1,122), building construction (1,116) and education (1,089).

Large part of the layoffs are announced for the month of April (14,691). Some other 8,383 people could lose their jobs in May, 598 in June, 493 in July, 30 in September and 20 in October.

Of the companies which announced employment agencies of their layoffs, 22,241 are privately-owned, 1,771 are state-owned and 203 have mixed ownership.

Last week, 294 companies throughout Romania sent notices to ANOFM, saying will lay off 21,656 people

In the first three months of 2009, Romanian companies announced they will cut 78,961 jobs.
