Basescu: Public Servants Shouldn’t Make More Money Than The President

Romanian President Traian Basescu on Wednesday said he does not care about the salary cap in the public sector following the introduction of a single and unitary law in the field, but that public servants in “civilized countries” do not make more money than the president.

“No civilized country has a state apparatus including salaries higher than that of the head of state, because salary grids are built according to a hierarchy,” Basescu told the public news radio station RRA.

Basescu said his salary is currently below many of the wages paid in the public sector.

“The institution of the presidency is below the average salary system in the public sector as well,” Basescu mentioned.

Romanian authorities approved on April 22 the general principles of the law of a single and unitary pay system in the public sector.

The draft act is to be finalized by end June and applied within three months.
