Basescu said he hopes the agreement will be made public both in the U.S. and in Romania in ten days.
The head of state said the ballistic missile defense system guarantees Romania the highest security level in its history.
„The agreement contains nothing secret. I want to dismiss any speculation that this agreement may have any secret clauses. I hope we can agree with the U.S. Department of State shortly and make the agreement public both in Romania and in the USA,” said Basescu.
He added the agreement will have to be ratified by the Romanian Parliament.
The legally-binding agreement will allow for the establishment and operation of a U.S. land-based SM-3 ballistic missile defense system in Romania.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi on Tuesday signed the Agreement on the Deployment of the Ballistic Missile Defense System in Romania. The agreement was signed shortly after the meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama, Vicepresident Joe Biden and Romanian President Traian Basescu.
The signing comes one year and a half after Romania’s participation in the defense system was announced, on February 4, 2010.
