The Senate plenary meeting was attended by 124 lawmakers.
Romanian President Traian Basescu Tuesday sent a letter to Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana and political parties calling on them to make a decision regarding the High Council of Magistrates during the current Parliament session.
According to people close to the matter, Basescu called attention to the key role the High Council of Magistrates plays in remedying problems concerning Romania’s progress under the Mechanism of Cooperation and Verification.
The head of state reminded senators that, starting January 2011, the term of the judges that make up the Council will expire, and election procedures are challenged and even invalidated by certain courts, said the sources.
Last Wednesday, senators failed to validate the eleven judges to make up the High Council of Magistrates, as they did not find common ground on election procedures.
