The Commission also said member states are required to prepare flood risk management plans by the end of 2015. These plans must include the actions to be taken to reduce flood risk, as well as protection, prevention and preparation measures, such as early warning systems.
MEP Sarbu also asked the Commission about integrated intervention mechanisms, to limit the loss of human life in floods. Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik said such a project is being prepared and might include a common pool of goods to be made available in case of disasters.
MEP Daciana Sarbu, a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, addressed this query following the floods in Romania in June-July.
