Massive Storm Hits 15 Romanian Counties, Bucharest

Romanian deputy prime minister Dan Nica said Wednesday that, following the storm on Tuesday, there were floods in 15 counties and Bucharest, 140 households in 44 localities, as well as 600 hectares of crops, and five national roads were damaged.

According to Nica, in Bucharest there were 245 fallen trees, 60 of them on roads, 20 on power cables, seven on public utilities pipes, 17 on buildings and 41 on cars.

In Bucharest, intervention crews used 59 trucks, four mechanical ladders, eight extrication vehicles, six motorized pumps and 429 agents.

In Valcea county (C Romania), four localities registered damages – Brezoi, Calimanesti, Vaideeni Slatioara -, 21 households and 50 homes were flooded. In addition, in Valcea county there were 400 hectares of crops flooded, while in the Slatioara commune several trees fell over power lines and the water supply was cut.

In the city of Ploiesti (C), intervention crews stepped in to remove water from sewers, in seven yards and homes.

Also, in Sinaia (C), water had to be removed from one home, and in the Drajna commune there were interventions to secure county road 102L, where a telephone line pole crashed.

In Neamt county (NE), there were six localities with damages – Piatra Neamt, Alexandru cel Bun, Tibucani, Garcina, Vodesti, Dobreni, with 64 households and five homes flooded. Damages were also registered on national roads DN12C, DN23, DN15C where 17 bridges were destroyed and three cars were damaged.

In Buzau county (C) there were six localities damaged – Buzau, Ramnicu Sarat, Vernesti, Sapuca, Galbinas, Merei, Greabanu, where the roof of a home and that of a church were damaged, as well as two cars, struck by falling trees.

In Braila county (E), in the communes Movila, Miresei and Gemenele, hail broke windows and damaged 500 homes, and 200 hectares of crops were flooded. In addition, the storm damaged the community medical office and two schools where the hail broke the windows.

In Arges county (C) there were five localities damaged, including Campulung Muscel, Pitesti, Curtea de Arges, Merisani, Mihaiesti, and 30 households were flooded.

In the city of Giurgiu (S), the roof of the "Vice amiral Ion Balanescu" high school was torn off by the wind and tossed on the street over a surface of 500 square meters, damaging three cars and the power grid.

In Dolj county (S), the localities Calafat and Ianca were damaged by rain, and eight households were flooded.

In Teleorman county (S), the localities Videle and Turnu Magurele were damaged, and in the town of Videle a tree fell over a house and a household was flooded.

In the city of Sibiu, two households were flooded.

In Olt county (S), the localities Potelu, Ianca, Bals and Corabia were flooded, and 10 households sustained damage. Intervention crews stepped in to remove the trees fallen on national roads DN54, DN54A between localities Corabia and Orlea and in the localities Studina Visina and Corabia.

In the town of Drobeta Turnu Severin (SW) the storm flooded two households.

Around the towns Slobozia and Urziceni in Ialomita county (SE), 21 trees fell on the national roads, which required the deployment of seven intervention trucks and over 30 intervention units.

In Gorj (S) too there was damage in the localities Rosia de Amaradia and Alimpesti, where 29 buildings were damaged, as well as nine animal shelters, 20 decks and two bridges.
