According to Serbanescu, "the casualty list includes no Romanian citizens, which means no Romanian citizen was injured or killed in the earthquake.”

Serbanescu added the ministry made public only preliminary data from firefighters and officials of the Romanian Church in the area, which are constantly in touch with the Romanian Embassy to Italy. Moreover, he said the information may not be so accurate due to unfortunate communication problems.

The earthquake’s epicenter was about 70 miles (110 kilometers) northeast of Rome near the medieval city of L’Aquila.

Interior Minister Roberto Moroni said 50 people had been killed.

Officials said the death toll was likely to rise as rescue crews clawed through the debris of fallen homes.
