Minculescu, 50, is suffering from an inherited illness, polycystic liver and kidney disease and needs a liver transplant. After the operation, he will remain in hospital for up to four weeks and then continue his recovery at home over the next two months.
Romanian Health Minister Ion Bazac stated that the cost of the operation, EUR47,000, will be paid by the ministry. National Health Insurance House president, Professor Irinel Popescu, who performed the first liver transplant in Romania, explained he agreed that Minculescu should have surgery in Germany but said he cannot state the reasons, which are confidential.
