Iliescu in a statement said he is deeply moved by the tragic death of the Polish leader. Iliescu also extended his deepest condolences to „the neighboring and friendly Polish nation.”

Romanian liberal and conservative officials also expressed their profound condolences and regrets to the tragic death of President Kaczynski, his wife Maria, senior officials and all those who died in the terrible accident.

A plane carrying Kaczynski, his wife, and other key government officials crashed in a heavy fog in western Russia Saturday morning, killing all people aboard, Polish officials said.

Polish central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek and several senior government officials were also among those on board the Tupolev Tu-154 plane, which came down as it neared Smolensk airport in western Russia.

Kaczynski was flying to Katyn, near Smolensk, for events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police in Katyn and elsewhere during World War II.

Crowds gathered Saturday in Polish capital Warsaw to lay flowers and light candles for Kaczynski, whose death raises questions for Poland’s government.
