"Germany has already announced a 15-20% hike in the gas price. Romania will follow this path. The price of the imported natural gas will hike in the last quarter of the year, and we have already begun talks with the country’s energy watchdog ANRE in this respect," Hajdinjak said.

He did not specify when the natural gas price might hike again in Romania.

E.ON Gaz Romania said it might face difficulties in covering the gas demands during winter, because the energy authority approved a lower household gas price hike compared with the company’s requests.

The household gas price was up by an average 12.5% as of July 1, on the costs increase in purchasing natural gas during January to June period, as well as in order to partially recover the price differences reported during that period, the energy authority said in June.

E.ON Gaz Romania and the country’s second largest gas distributor Distrigaz Sud, majority-owned by French utility Gaz de France, had initially requested ANRE a 19% rise of prices on April 1. The companies revised the gas prices hike demand to 24% to cover losses from soaring import prices.

E.ON Gaz Romania will ask ANRE for a new household gas price increase at yearend, in order to cover losses, Hajdinjak said in June.

The household gas price is lower compared with the distributors’ requests.
