About 70% Of Romanians Believe Corruption Increased In Romania Last Year – Poll

About two thirds (67%) of Romanians consider that corruption in the country increased in 2011, 6% believe it decreased and 26% say the level of corruption remained unchanged, according to a survey conducted at the request of the Association Implementing Democracy.

The Army enjoys the highest level of credibility (55% of respondents said they trust the military). It is followed by education institutions (51%), the Gendarmerie (47%), public healthcare institutions (37%) and local public authorities (34%). The Parliament is seen as the most corrupt institution.

About 81% of respondents in Bucharest said the level of corruption in Romania increased over the past twelve months. Over half of them (56%) admitted to having offered favors, either themselves or their family, in the past year.

Moreover, 34% of respondents admitted to having offered bribes in 2011, either themselves or their family. Two in three respondents said they did not offer bribes last year.

About 38% of the people polled said they spent over 100 lei (EUR23) on favors, 31% spent below RON50 on boons and 30% said they spent between RON51 and RON100 on various favors last year.

According to the poll, 42% of Romanians believe one may succeed in Romania without being corrupt, while 57% said the opposite.

About 85% of them said that, if they were public officials, they would not become corrupt. (EUR1=RON4.3398)
