Mazare was sentenced on charges of taking bribes, abuse of office and continued conflict of interest. The decision is not final and can be appealed.
Businessman Sorin Strutinsky was also sentenced to seven years and ten months in prison in the same case. Five other former Constanta City Hall employees received suspended prison sentences in the case.
According to prosecutors, the former Constanta mayor, with the help of Strutinsky, received more than EUR7 million in bribes from Polaris SRL from 2008 to 2014, after he ensured that the company won a public auction to manage city sanitation works for a 25-year period in 2008.
In the same case, the two associates ensured a bribe of EUR1 million and RON2.4 million from two commercial societies, in exchange for facilitating the issuing of urbanism authorizations to build new malls in the city.
Radu Mazare, who served as mayor of Constanta between 2000 and 2015, is currently seeking political asylum in Madagascar, where he is residing since 2017. The former mayor previously received two other prison sentences for corruption offences, in final decisions.
