Iliescu added he hopes for a high voter turnout.

"I think most people do realize things cannot go on like this any longer and we must vote to bring normality and mutual respect," Iliescu said.

Iliescu, a former communist who is largely blamed for the events in 1989 and the miners' riots a year later, was Romania's first president after the fall of the communist regime 20 years ago.

About 18 million Romanian eligible voters are expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect their president for the next five years and will choose between incumbent President Traian Basescu and social democrat Mircea Geoana.

Polls close at GMT1900.
