Antonescu said he cast his ballot to rid Romania of a nightmare of the dark period it has been crossing and called on Romanians to go to the polls.
„I hope many Romanians come to the polls today to give Romania a chance to normality, to change things for the better, to rid the country of this dark chapter,” Antonescu said.
Although incumbent President Traian Basescu, who represents the country’s political center and is running for reelection, has repeatedly said the country needs a right-winged government, Antonescu said liberals will not team up with Basescu’s democrat liberals even if the incumbent were to garner 100% of Sunday’s vote.
About 18 million Romanian eligible voters are expected to cast ballots Sunday to elect their president for the next five years and will choose between incumbent President Traian Basescu and social democrat Mircea Geoana.
Polls close at GMT1900.
