Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu Voted For Social Democrat Candidate
Former Romanian president and honorary Social Democratic Party president Ion Iliescu said Sunday he voted for his party’s candidate, Mircea Geoana, but did not vote in the referendum, which he dismissed as “pointless.”

"I share the opinion of the five NGOs which said this referendum is useless and merely a whim of Mr. Basescu. It is pointless because any amendment must be passed by Parliament, therefore it is only a diversion in the campaign. I ignored this whim," Iliescu said.
Asked by the press about his choice for president, Iliescu began to say "Basescu", the country's incumbent president running for reelection, but immediately corrected himself and said "Geoana," his party's candidate.
