Two weeks ago, nine localities in the Province of Pisa (the northwestern region of Tuscany) said they would offer sums ranging from EUR500 to EUR1,500 to stimulate Romanian Roma to leave Italy for at least one year. The program is financed from public funds provided by localities in the Province of Pisa, among which, the Pisa mayoralty.
Forty Romanian Roma agreed to leave Italy under these circumstances and a Red Cross bus took them from Pisa to southern Romanian city of Craiova, Dolj county, where they arrived Monday evening.
In the fallout of repatriation measures, Italian authorities managed to close two illegal camps in Pisa, Aurelia Nord and Cisanello, which the aforementioned had used as shelter.
The program aiming to stimulate repatriation engulfed less than EUR30,000. Each Romanian Roma family received sums ranging from EUR500 to EUR1,500 (depending on the number of family members).
In addition, the aforementioned signed declarations which ban them from requiring other forms of social assistance and returning to Italy for at least one year.
