On June 28, nanny Ecaterina Spirea received a 3,000 lei (EUR1=RON4.3048) criminal fine, and was also sentenced to pay RON2,000 in damages.
The Court of Sector 6, Bucharest, also found that in 2007 the defendant received a definitive, suspended sentence to one year in prison for embezzlement and ruled to lift the suspension.
In July 2008, Spirea was hired to care for three-year old Andrei Razvan and one-year old Alexia Ramona. Prosecutors revealed a series of surveillance video recordings, which show Spirea slapping, beating and forcing the two children to kneel. Several witnesses also testified to confirm the mother’s accusations against the culprit.
The decision can be appealed.
On June 16, the same Bucharest Court ordered a nanny who mistreated the two year-old girl in her care to pay a criminal fine, moral damages and court fees, a first for the Romanian judicial system.
