„The driver has been detained for 24 hours and prosecutors will require a warrant for preventive arrest this afternoon,” said local police spokeswoman Ancusa Carbunaru.

She said the driver, Cristian Ungur, is accused of causing bodily harm, driving under the influence of alcohol and fleeing the scene of an accident.

Ungur, 24, drove his car onto the Caransebes airport runway during a motorcycle racing competition Sunday afternoon and hit four people in the audience. Two of the victims have suffered minor injures and have been released from hospital, but the other two victims have been seriously hit and will require weeks of hospitalization.

Police said Ungur fled the scene of the accident and was chased and caught by police and motorcyclists in the competition.
