Romanian Social Democrat Head Sees Early Elections As Crisis Vent
Geoana said that the only solution for what he called "the political and institutional standstill" would be early elections, which might bring quicker “redeeming.”
He added that the Parliament elections will have to be held within the uninominal voting system and they must not affect the organization of the NATO summit.
Geoana said that, in this respect, the Executive Committee reiterated the social democrat support for the enactment, by the end of this month, of a law on the uninominal voting system. In addition, Geoana called on the liberals and the democrat liberals to hasten principle talks on the uninominal voting system and to move on to the technical phase.
He added that the Committee discussed early elections, while party leadership was mandated to use all democratic means that might solve the current crisis.
Referring to one of the fundamental instruments through which early elections might be triggered, Geoana said that a no-confidence motion was mentioned as a possibility by some of the Committee members, but a decision has yet to be made.
"Traian Basescu and Calin Tariceanu are the ones who need to find a solution for the deep current crisis, for the constant conflict they have created and maintained. If the pushing back of early elections and their coupling with local elections would be a solution for the crisis, the Social Democratic Party would not hesitate to join this solution," Geoana said.
