Romanian 2011 Draft Budget Ensures Wage Fund For 1.29 Million State Employees

Romania’s Prime Minister Emil Boc said Friday that the draft budget for 2011 ensures salary funds for 1.29 million employees and dismissed as false union leaders’ recent statements that the salary fund included in the draft budget for next year does not cover the total number of state employees.

Boc highlighted that current layoff procedures in the public sector will not be followed by similar measures.

The prime minister said Romania had 1,316,000 employees in the public sector at the end of September and added their number must be reduced to 1,290,000 by the end of the year.

Union representatives said Thursday, after talks at the Labor Ministry, the draft budget for next year lacks the funds needed to pay wages of 80,000 state employees, adding this would translate into new layoffs and wage cuts. Union official Razvan Bordeanu said that, if next year’s wage fund is set at 39 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2883), 7% of the total number of state employees, or 80,000, will be impacted.
