Freedom House: Romania Retains Its ‘Free’ Status

The U.S.-based think tank organization said Romania is among countries with both political freedom and civil liberties.

The countries of Central and Eastern Europe benefited from proximity to Western Europe and, for most, membership in the European Union, the report noted.

“While countries like Hungary, Poland, and Romania have experienced periods of political upheaval and discontent over living standards, corruption, and other matters, their political systems have displayed a resilience that is notably missing in formerly communist countries that lack such close ties to the established democracies of Western Europe,” it said.

Romania’s neighboring country, Moldova is considered only “partly free,” according to the report.

The number of countries that Freedom House labelled as "free" in 2007 stood at 90, representing 46 percent of the global population, the report said.
