The car plant in Algeria is estimated to produce 50,000 units to enter the local market.
Romania exported 17,327 cars to Algeria last year, followed by Germany (84,708 units), France (65,956 units), and Italy (21,739 units).
Renault's subsidiary in Algeria did not provide any details regarding the value of the investment.
Under Algerian laws, a foreign investor is forbidden to be major shareholder of a local company. Therefore, Renault will own 49% of the shares, but will control the whole activity, while state-owned auto company SNVI will have 51% of the stake.
Renault sold 56,000 cars in Algeria in 2009, 39,000 Renault cars and 17,000 Dacia cars, says LeMonde.
Renault controls about a quarter of the Algerian market.
