Ten More Romanian Border Police Officers Placed Under Arrest
Twenty-five border police officers have so far been placed under arrest and the court is expected to rule Wednesday in the case of 15 others.
Anticorruption prosecutors have detained 53 border police officers, including customs chief Daniel Corbean. Prosecutors have requested arrest warrants for 40 of them while the rest will be investigated at large and are under a travel ban.
Raids and arrests at the Albita customs, one of the busiest border crossing points in eastern Romania, are part of a wider operation to crack down on corruption in Romanian customs points.
Earlier this month, authorities arrested 59 border police and customs workers at the Siret crossing point in northeastern Romania on charges of corruption and contraband. Also, 90 people have been arrested under the same charges following raids through five border crossing points in western Romania.
