Somali Pirates Free Greek-Flagged Oil Tanker Crew, Including One Romanian

Somali pirates have released Greek-flagged oil tanker VLCC Maran Centaurus and its crew, which also includes one Romanian, after they received millions of dollars in ransom, a Kenya-based maritime watchdog and pirate sources said Monday.

The Maran Centaurus was seized on November 29, 2009 with nine Greeks, two Ukrainians, one Romanian and 16 Filipinos on board.

The ship was carrying two million barrels of oil from Saudi Arabia destined for the United States.

At the end of 2009, Somali pirates were holding at least 12 vessels for ransom with 263 crew members of various nationalities as hostages, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB).
