Yushchenko met Tuesday with Romania’s President Traian Basescu at the headquarters of the Romanian Presidency. The two held a press conference at the end of their meeting.
Speaking about the issue of the Bystroye Canal, Yushchenko said, according to the official translation ensured during his speech, that the area of the Bystroye Canal is a sovereign territory where the Ukrainian state has the right to unfold a sovereign activity "in this respect."
"This is a general stand on which the Romanian counterpart was informed today. Today, we mainly focused on this issue," Yushchenko said.
Yushchenko stressed that the joint Romanian-Ukrainian presidential commission debated the issue of the Bystroye Canal and the fact that the Ukrainian party undertakes to fulfill the international commitments regarding the environment protection.
Yushchenko also pointed out that a protocol was signed during the meeting with Basescu, which stipulates that progresses have been made in what concerns the Bystroye issue.
