Romanian Presidential Election Prelim Results AtGMT1200: Basescu – 32.74%, Geoana – 30.16%

Romania’s incumbent president Traian Basescu obtained 32.74% of votes in the first round of elections and social democrat candidate Mircea Geoana got 30.16%, according to preliminary results released by the Central Electoral Bureau after counts in 85.88% of polling stations.

Liberal candidate Crin Antonescu got 20.24% of the votes.

Next come far-rightist Corneliu Vadim Tudor (5.4%), Hungarian minority representative Kelemen Hunor (4.33%), independent Sorin Oprescu (3.26%) and Steaua owner George Becali (1.89%).

The other candidates earned less than 1%, according to the preliminary results released by the Electoral Bureau. Green Party candidate Remus Cernea obtained 0.63%, socialist Constantin Rotaru – 0.44 %, independent Eduard Manole – 0.35%, Ecologist Party candidate Ovidiu Iane – 0.23% and independent Ninel Potarca earned 0.21 %.
