Romania Presidential Election Voter Turnout At 56.99% By GMT1900
Turnout was of 54.72% in urban areas and 60.11% in rural areas.
In capital Bucharest, voter turnout by GMT1900 was of 54.90%.
Both leftist Mircea Geoana and incumbent Traian Basescu claimed victory although exit polls showed Geoana ahead with little over 50% of the vote.
First official results are expected Monday morning.
While polls in the country have closed, 204 polling stations out of 294 set up abroad are still open. The last polling stations close Monday morning at GMT0500 on the west coast of the United States.
