Romanian Social Democrats Request Clear Limits In Govt-President Interaction

Romanian social democrat leader Mircea Geoana said Friday, after a meeting of party leaders, that “clear” stances should be taken regarding the interference of President Traian Basescu in the Government’s activity, adding the head of state is an element of “disturbance”.

Geoana said, after the meeting of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) National Executive Committee meeting that the PSD entered the Government coalition in tough times, when the economic crisis was gaining momentum.

"Equally, we cannot overlook the destabilizing, troublesome and instability generating manner in which president Traian Basescu interferes with this coalition," Geoana said, adding the PSD entered the Government coalition in good faith, alongside the democrat liberals.

"We still consider this coalition possible and necessary in a time of crisis, but at the same time we need to display a clear and unequivocal stance regarding Traian Basescu’s interference in the Romanian Executive’s activity and the president’s lack of observance for the state power separation principle," he added.

Geoana said the PSD will request, on a coalition level, a clarification debate regarding the manner in which the coalition protocol is observed by both parties involved.

The social democrat leader went on saying that, in the absence of a clear reply, the party’s obligations, as well as the party’s responsibility will be subject to inner-party decision.
