The party is electing its new leaders in a national congress meeting Saturday. With Mitrea and Mazare out of the race, the internal election will be between current party leader Mircea Geoana, former foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu and former minister-delegate Victor Ponta.

Former prime minister Adrian Nastase backed out of the race for party president earlier this week, disapproving of Geoana and his supporters’ idea that party leaders should be voted on lists rather than elected individually.

Also this week, party founder Ion Iliescu quit his honorary party president position saying he wants to retire from politics. He also criticized the organization of inner elections.
