German carmaker Daimler contacted Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu about the company’s plans to open an auto assembly plant in Romania, and the premier requested several ministers to draw a list of possible locations for such a production unit.

Government spokeswoman Camelia Spataru denied that Tariceanu had received a call from Daimler officials.
"The prime minister was called by Daimler officials and asked several ministers in charge with such projects to make a list of possible locations,” government sources told MEDIAFAX Friday.
The northwestern area of Cluj was targeted by the German carmaker for the future plant, but other locations are also considered, such as the surroundings of (northwestern country of Alba), where Daimler owns a gearbox plant, the sources said.
In 2001, DaimlerChrysler group founded the joint-venture Star Transmission in Cugir, whet it makes car parts for Mercedes Benz and the European automotive industry.
Contacted by MEDIAFAX, Daimler officials in Stuttgart, where the group is based, refused to make any comments.
German weekly Automobilwoche announced Tuesday that Daimler is considering either Romania or Poland to open a new production unit, where it plans to make new Mercedes models starting 2011.
The Romanian market includes two carmakers: Automobile Dacia owned by France’s Renault, and Automobile Craiova, which US giant Ford agreed to buy for EUR57 million. The deal with Ford is pending approval from the European Commission.
Daimler has a market value of EUR53 billion and production units in 17 countries.
