The Romanian typical debtor owes rather small sums in consumer debt, the Credit Bureau’s general manager Serban Epure told a press conference.

Last year, a similar survey by risk management company Coface Romania showed the typical debtor as a 35-year-old man living in Bucharest.

According to Epure, reports filed by the Bureau dropped 40% in the first two months of the year compared to the corresponding period of 2008, due to a decrease in loans.

“It is a regional trend. Other credit bureaus in the region had a similar evolution, as the crisis triggered a shrinking of the loans,” Epure said.

He said most of the debts in Romania are consumer debts.

“Overdue payments represent a calming percentage, of 1.5%, of overall loans,” Epure said.

Romanian central bank’s data showed overdue loans increased 2.6 times to 2.86 billion lei (EUR1=RON4.2817) in 2008, from RON1.09 billion in the previous year.
