Preliminary Results: Independent Candidate Leads Elections For Bucharest Mayoralty

Romania’s Central Electoral Office Tuesday said independent candidate Sorin Oprescu leads the race for Bucharest mayoralty with 30.17% of the votes, which places him ahead of democrat liberal rival Vasile Blaga who gained 29.48% of the votes.

Social democrat candidate Cristian Diaconescu ranks third with 12.47% of the votes.
 
Neither of the top-two candidates gained 50% plus one of the total votes to avoid a runoff.
 
The results were released after counting the votes cast at 1,136 polling stations, out of a total 1,181.
 
Overall turnout at polling places in Bucharest was of 31.14% of registered voters.
