“The government discussed in Wednesday’s meeting about the organization of local elections and it was agreed in principle to hold the first round of elections on June 1. discussions are still underway,” they said.

Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said last week that local elections will most likely be held late May and early June, at a date so as not to overlap with Easter or the European Football Championship.

Tariceanu said repeatedly he is not considering moving up or postponing local polls.

European Football Championship takes place June 7-29.

Democrat liberals proposed that local elections should be held on May 25 and June 8 and all other parties agreed to the dates in principle.
